iconic cities in the world, with a history spanning over four centuries. From its humble origins as a Dutch trading post, the city has grown to become the financial, cultural, and artistic center of the planet. 1624 ### Dutch Foundation Dutch settlers founded Nieuw Amsterdam on the southern tip of Manhattan, establishing a trading post for the Dutch West India Company. 1664 ### New York Is Born The English seized the Dutch colony and renamed it New York in honor of the Duke of York, brother of King Charles II of England. 1776 ### The American Revolution New York became a crucial battleground in the War of Independence. The Battle of Long Island was one of the largest engagements of the revolution. 1789 ### First Capital of the USA George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the United States at Federal Hall on Wall Street, making New York the nation's first capital. 1886 ### The Statue of Liberty France gifted the Statue of Liberty to the United States, which was unveiled in New York Harbor as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. 1898 ### The Five Boroughs Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island merged to form the City of New York, creating the metropolis we know today. 1931 ### The Empire State Building The Empire State Building was completed, standing at 1,454 feet tall and becoming the world's tallest building — a symbol of American ambition and progress. 1950s ### World Cultural Capital New York established itself as the global center of art, jazz music, Broadway theater, and beat literature, attracting artists from around the world. 2001 ### September 11th The terrorist attacks destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. The city showed extraordinary resilience and unity in rebuilding.
