2,000 Years of Budapest
Budapest's story begins almost 2,000 years ago when the Romans founded Aquincum, the bustling capital of the province of Pannonia, on the Buda side of the Danube. After centuries of Magyar settlement and the medieval splendour of the Hungarian kingdom, the city endured 150 years of Ottoman rule — leaving behind a unique legacy of thermal baths still in use today.The Habsburg era transformed Budapest into a co-capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, sparking a golden age that gave us the Parliament, the Opera House, Andrássy Avenue and Heroes' Square — all built to celebrate the millennium of Hungary in 1896. Wars and revolutions of the 20th century left deep scars, yet the city has emerged as one of Europe's most vibrant capitals, where coffeehouse culture, ruin bars and contemporary art live side by side with imperial monuments.
